Cartersville Medical Center to offer free oral cancer screenings

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- The Hope Center at Cartersville Medical Center will provide free oral, head and neck cancer screenings next month.

Local doctors will screen patients on Friday, Sept. 19 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The test is simple and only takes about 10 minutes to complete.

According to Cartersville Medical Center, about 13,000 people die of oral, head and neck cancers every year. The diseases do not often carry obvious symptoms, which makes screenings even more important.

Potential warning signs of oral cancer include mouth sores that don't heal, difficulty chewing or swallowing, a persistent sore throat and changes in the voice.

Smokers are at greatest risk for oral cancers, but cases are also on the rise in young people, due in part to the increase of the human papillomavirus.

Cartersville Medical Center is located at 960 Joe Frank Harris Parkway.
