Bartow County couple found guilty in baby's death

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. -- A Bartow County couple has been found guilty of murdering the woman's 1-year-old child in 2014.

The jury began deliberating Wednesday in the trial for Brandy Boyd and her boyfriend Austin Payne. Wednesday afternoon, both defendants were convicted of felony murder, but found not guilty of malice murder.

Charges for the two were upgraded to felony murder after an autopsy showed Journey Ann Cowart suffered multiple injuries from abuse, including a fractured skull and blunt force trauma to her stomach.

The Bartow County Medical Examiner said Journey's death was the worst case of child abuse he'd ever seen, according to Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap.

"It's a systematic six to seven months of abuse on this young child," Millsap said.

Boyd and Payne were arrested in January 2014, not long after Journey stopped breathing and was rushed to Cartersville Medical Center. She was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

Sentencing for the couple will be at later date.
