CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- A recent Cass High School graduate has won a $2,500 scholarship from McDonald's.

Veronica Cuevas was nominated for the McDonald's National Employee Scholarship Award by Paula Matla, manager of the Cartersville McDonald's where she works.

"Veronica exemplifies the qualities of a true leader," Matla said in a statement. "She has done an outstanding job both in the restaurant and in school, using lessons from both to reach her goals."

Cuevas was valedictorian of Cass High's Class of 2013 and will begin her freshman year at Stanford University this fall. She has worked for McDonald's since 2010.

"McDonald's continues to provide me with opportunities to learn and grow," Cuevas said. "This restaurant offers flexible hours, which allow me to work my schedule around my academic and other responsibilities. The experience will serve me in my college classes and beyond."
