Four draft picks opt to attend Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. -- Three members of Georgia's latest baseball recruiting class along with rising senior pitcher Patrick Boling will be wearing Bulldog red and black in 2014 after passing on a chance to sign a professional contract.

Seven Bulldog signees plus three student-athletes from the 2013 club were selected in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft this past June, and teams had until Friday to sign their draft picks.

Pitcher Robert Tyler (Baltimore, 28th round), outfielder Stephen Wrenn (Atlanta, 28th round) and shortstop Michael Bell (Miami, 37th round) look to be key contributors for the Bulldogs over the next few years after choosing to honor their commitment to the University of Georgia. Also, the return of the versatile Boling (Washington, 32nd round) bolsters the pitching staff.

ATLANTA -- The winners of the 2013 AJC Peachtree Road Race lottery were chosen Monday morning.

If you weren't picked, don't despair. There are still plenty of local 10Ks, half marathons and other ways to challenge yourself between now and Independence Day.

Here are a few of the upcoming races in metro Atlanta. All of them have options that are longer than a 5K (or 3.1 miles); all start times and costs listed are for the longer races.

Falcons prepare for Minicamp

Falcons prepare for Minicamp

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga -- The OTAs are winding down at the Atlanta Falcons' headquarters in Flowery Branch.  The voluntary off season workouts have been well attended and the participation looks to be paying off.

With new Offensive and Defensive Coordinators, the team has spent the past few weeks digesting changes that are being put in place for the 2012 season.  Wide receiver Harry Douglas is glad the changes are taking place this year rather than last summer, when the NFL teams were locked out.  Douglas has spent time working special teams as a punt returner during OTAs and says "I did it some during my roookie season and fell in love with it."  It will be something to watch for during training camp.

Meanwhile, Head Coach Mike Smith was pleased with the level of participation and what the team has accomplished during the OTAs and says the upcoming Minicamp will be a continuation of what has been taking place the past few weeks.

Subway celebrates 500th Metro Atlanta store

ATLANTA -- With the arrival of several new stores this month, Subway celebrates the opening of more than 500 stores in Metro Atlanta since its first location in 1977.

This milestone is a testament to the Subway brand and the franchisees who have made it so successful in the Atlanta area -- not to mention the world, as Subway is the planet's largest restaurant chain with over 34,000 locations.

"We continue to offer a dining experience that meets the changing tastes and needs of our loyal patrons, so it is no surprise to see this important achievement," said Christi Estis, director of operations for Subway Development of Atlanta. "We could not have reached this milestone without the dedication of our model franchisees and employees.
